Horizontal Text 02/2019

As a painter, I concern myself with the medium of painting and its history, the romantic image of the daily ritual, and the handling and experimentation with materials, surfaces, and forms of presentation. I wish for my work to be in direct dialogue with the work of friends and collaborators and in itself to become the possibility for dialogue and positivity.

Evenly important to my practice, I question the impact and role as a consumer of the landscape that I engage with, finding myself in a contradictory kind of ménage à trois with the urban and the rural. Moving back and forth between a verticality of the city and a horizontality of the country in search of specific points of location and interest in the form of lakes, beaches, and coastal areas for instance, my work becomes the observation of an ambiguity of meaning these sites provide for their diverse occupants. San Francisco’s Lands’ End, St. Thomas, and recent travels to Akko in Israel, the German coast of the Baltic Sea, the Southwest Algarve of Portugal have become the subject of my paintings, drawings, and installations.
